Massimo Vignelli

"Work is Worship" is the quotation Massimo Vignelli chose to illustrate for the poster he designed honoring his longtime friend, George Lois.

Architect, industrial and graphic designer, Massimo is famous for saying "If you can design one thing, you can design everything." Considered by many to be one of the most influential practitioners of all time, his impact on visual culture in the 20th century is unparalleled. His Vignelli Canon should be required reading for designers of every stripe. And their clients. Download a free copy here.

In 2010 Rochester Institute of Technology established the Vignelli Center for Design Studies. In 2012 George presented his archives to the institution, joining those of Lester Beall, Will Burtin, Cipe Pineles, William Golden, Alvin Lustig, Leo Lionni and of course, Massimo and Lella Vignelli.

A POSTER PROJECT FROM
TYPOGRAPHYSHOP.

TypographyShop is honored to announce the George Lois Poster Project and to unveil the first in the series, "Work is Worship" by acclaimed designer Massimo Vignelli.

George Lois is an American Icon. A living legend in the world of advertising whose influence has been felt in spheres far outside the world of marketing. The originator of The Big Idea in advertising, he remains a relevant voice in our culture to this day.

From his ground breaking work at Doyle Dane Bernbach to his controversial Esquire covers to "I want my MTV," George Lois has carved a career sans equal in the advertising industry.

Since the beginning of our affiliation with George we wanted to find a more reverent vehicle with which to pay him homage beyond t-shirts or coffee mugs. We felt that a poster series designed by friends and fans of his would be a fitting tribute, and are honored to have some of the most celebrated designers of our era on board.

The roster thus far includes Gail Anderson, Seymour Chwast, Rodrigo Corral, Stephen Doyle, Louise Fili,  Debbie Millman, Emily Oberman, Jennifer Sterling, James Victore and Massimo Vignelli. Each will be illustrating a Lois quote of their choosing.

In addition George will be collaborating on a limited edition letterpress poster with Patrick King of TypographyShop.

The posters will be available for purchase on TypographyShop and other outlets as each designer completes their contribution. If you are a retailer interested in carrying the series please contact us here.

Plans are underway to mount an exhibition of the posters in New York and elsewhere. Please contact us if your organization would be interested in hosting it.
